Microsoft 365 Copilot Wave 3 β From Assistant to Agent That Executes
Wave 3 is not a regular update. It is an architectural shift: Copilot moves from a side panel to an agent that executes work directly inside the applications you already use.
On March 9, 2026, Microsoft officially announced Microsoft 365 Copilot Wave 3 β the most ambitious update in the Copilot series to date. If Wave 1 introduced AI into apps, and Wave 2 expanded it as an ecosystem, Wave 3 fundamentally changes how Copilot works.
We are no longer talking about an assistant that suggests text. We are talking about an agent that executes: drafts, sends emails, builds presentations, analyzes data, and orchestrates complex workflows β while you focus on something else.
“Not AI next to the work. AI inside the work.”
1. The fundamental shift from Wave 1 & 2
If you have used Copilot before, you know it as a side panel β useful for suggestions, summaries, and draft text. You had to copy, adjust, and move the result into your document.
Wave 3 eliminates this intermediate step.
| Before (Wave 1 & 2) | Now (Wave 3) |
|---|---|
| Side panel, isolated from the document | Edits directly inside the document, in the right place |
| One prompt β one response | Complex, multi-step tasks running over hours |
| Generic content, no organizational context | Full context: emails, meetings, files, colleagues |
| Writing help and suggestions | Executes: sends, schedules, generates, organizes |
π‘ If Copilot used to be a colleague who gave you ideas, in Wave 3 it becomes a colleague who gets the work done for you.
2. What's new per application
Wave 3 brings native agentic capabilities to all core Microsoft 365 applications:
π Word (Available now β GA)
- Inline editing: restructures sections, shortens text, adds context from related emails and meetings.
- No more copying from the panel β Copilot intervenes directly inside the document.
- No longer just a drafting tool.
π Excel (Available now β GA)
- Agent mode: multi-step data analysis β builds formulas, charts, and new sheets.
- You can follow the reasoning step by step, not just see the final result.
- No longer just a formula explainer.
π PowerPoint (Rolling out)
- Generates complete presentations from a prompt, following the organization’s templates and branding.
- Asks clarifying questions about audience, structure, and tone before building.
- No longer just a slide generator.
π§ Outlook (Rolling out)
- Analyzes email threads, automatically schedules meetings by finding available time slots.
- Drafts responses and organizes the inbox.
- No longer just a writing aid.
π¬ Copilot Chat β the new central hub (Available now)
- From chat you can create Word documents, Excel spreadsheets, or PowerPoint presentations directly.
- You can trigger actions β schedule a meeting, send an email to the team β without switching context.
- Agents for Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook are invoked directly from the conversation.
- No longer an isolated chat bar. It is the orchestration layer of M365.
3. Copilot Cowork β from chatbot to agent that works for hours
The most important element in Wave 3. Copilot Cowork is built in partnership with Anthropic (Claude Cowork technology) and represents the leap from isolated interactions to autonomous, long-running workflows.
The concept is simple: you give it a complex goal, Cowork breaks it down into steps, executes them in the right order across multiple applications, and keeps you informed with checkpoints along the way.
π Concrete example: preparing a client meeting
You give a single prompt: “Prepare everything needed for tomorrow’s meeting with client X.”
- Builds the PowerPoint presentation based on the brief from SharePoint.
- Gathers the relevant financial data from Excel.
- Sends the team an email with the agenda and materials attached.
- Checks availability and confirms the time in everyone’s calendar.
- Reports progress β you remain in control at all times.
Your total time invested: 30 seconds for the prompt + final review.
β What Cowork brings:
- Autonomous execution of complex, multi-step tasks.
- Native orchestration across Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Teams.
- Contextualization through Work IQ (collaboration history, organizational data).
- Full visibility β you can pause, modify, or approve at any point.
- Ideal for meeting preparation, periodic reports, and onboarding processes.
β οΈ What you need to know:
- Currently available as a research preview β limited access through the Frontier Program.
- Anthropic models must be enabled by IT Admin in EU regions (opt-in).
- Requires an active M365 Copilot license.
- Broader rollout planned, with no exact date confirmed publicly.
4. Work IQ β the intelligence layer that makes everything relevant
Copilot has often been criticized for generic responses with no real context. Work IQ is Microsoft’s answer to this problem: an intelligence layer that understands the full context of your work within the organization.
- π§ Analyzes emails, meetings, documents, and collaboration history.
- π’ Understands the organization’s structure and the relationships between projects.
- π Allows Copilot to update existing documents with relevant information β rather than creating new isolated files.
- π Respects existing permissions β it does not access what you are not authorized to see.
π‘ Without Work IQ, Copilot knows a document exists. With Work IQ, it understands that the document is linked to client X, was discussed in Tuesday’s meeting, and was last updated by the sales team yesterday.
5. Agent 365 β the control plane for AI agents
As Copilot becomes more autonomous, a legitimate question immediately arises in any serious organization: “Who supervises what the AI is doing?”
Agent 365 is Microsoft’s answer. A centralized management and governance platform for all AI agents in the organization β both native Microsoft agents and those built custom in Copilot Studio.
| Capability | What it means in practice |
|---|---|
| Centralized visibility | A single dashboard showing all active agents: what they do, what data they access, what actions they execute in real time |
| Governance and control | You can approve, suspend, or revoke an agent’s access. You define what permissions it has and what data it can act on |
| Audit and compliance | Complete logs for all agent actions. Essential for GDPR, internal audits, and security investigations |
| Threat protection | Detects abnormal behavior (e.g., unusual data access). Integrated with Microsoft Defender and Purview |
| Identity management | Each agent has its own identity and granular permission set. You control what it can do on behalf of users |
π‘ Without Agent 365, hundreds of autonomous agents would run in the organization without IT knowing what they do, what data they access, or how to stop them. Agent 365 is the difference between chaotic AI and governed AI.

8. Stadler & Partners conclusion
- β If you already have M365 Copilot β activate the new features in Word and Excel. They are available now, with no additional license required.
- π Evaluate Agent 365 before May 2026 β especially if you are building custom agents in Copilot Studio or Power Automate.
- π For Copilot Cowork β apply for the Frontier Program if you have 5,000+ M365 Copilot licenses, or contact your Microsoft partner.
- π Do not overlook governance β the more the AI does, the more critical access policies, audit, and compliance become. Agent 365 is not optional in the long run.
- π Calculate ROI before committing to E7 β if you already have E5 + Copilot, the difference in price may or may not be justified depending on your organization’s AI maturity.
π‘ In short:
β Word and Excel agentic features are available now β there is no reason to wait.
β Agent 365 is the answer to the question “but who controls the AI?”.
β Cowork is the direction: a single prompt, complete results.
